︎
Thinking on Screen is workshop that experiments with audiovisual ways of articulating a thinking process. It teaches methods and approaches the video essay as a particular media form and mode of research. Image, sound, and words form the essential materials for presenting thoughts on screen—amplifying voices of participants as they explore their chosen subjects.
By working with filmed or found footage and employing various montage methods, participants can develop their own audiovisual vocabularies as they explore investigate particular questions and concerns. By communicating a thinking process, the video essay is an engaging means for exploring and sharing research findings that are as subjective as they are meaningful, as critical as they are playful, and as radical as they are open-ended.
Thinking on Screen has run at MA Space and Communication at HEAD Genève (2022, 2023) and MA Visual Communication at ZHdK Zurich (2024, 2025).
