Line Drawings traces a recurring visual theme across multiple images of space exploration. The video essay joins together materials from European Space Agency media—dating from the 1980s to today—with a database of science fiction films partly or wholly set on the Moon. As the work unfolds, a series of lines reach for, encircle, enclose, divide, and tether the Moon in multiplying gestures of lunar relation. Amid the current global race to return to Earth’s natural satellite, it aims to amplify a tension found along the fine lines separating exploration from exploitation.

Elsewhere responds to the promise of virtual reality to experience new worlds as new characters in new bodies. The work imagines a fall from one reality into another, and a transition between physical and virtual senses of presence. A man stumbles and wades alone through a country stream. He appears out of place, his grey city clothes in contrast with the surrounding green landscape. On his face rest a pair of glasses with a lens conspicuously missing. He ignores the world around him, absorbed in the search for a means to escape it—to return to somewhere else and to be someone else.

In Straight Circles traces the path of an imaginary infrastructure through a history of science fiction and speculative science film. After Wernher von Braun, chief Apollo engineer, first popularised the design in the early 1950s, the wheel-shaped space station continues to rotate in imagery from the Space Age to the present. Whether imagined as an intermediary gateway to exploring distant planets, or as a floating space settlement housing thousands of people, the great wheel remains a visual icon at the heart of future visions for human expansion into outer space.

This short video essay considers the ways in which leading space industry actors stage parts of the planet as "wilderness," and speaks to ethnographies that engage with the uneven, unjust, and earthly terrains which certain outer space activities are embedded within. It joins archival and contemporary imagery from the European Spaceport in French Guiana with footage of nuclear tests in the Nevada desert—pairing distinct landscapes which have been framed by selective perspectives and subjected to violent experiments.

The video departs from the phrase "rumble in the jungle," used by a broadcaster on an Arianespace livestream, as they described the Ariane 6 rocket launching from the spaceport. From here, the audiovisual juxtapositions aim to collide such ambivalent gestures of power with the wider social and environmental ramifications of the projects they help to stabilise.

The One-Way Ticket (2012) Film

The One-Way Ticket explores the idea of sending one person on a one-way trip to outer space. Not coming back opens up an exceptional scenario, so far unprecedented in the history of human space travel. The project focuses on the experience of a lone astronaut and responds to research into human factors particular to a one-way mission. In parallel with this research ran a production of props, contraptions and sets made for exploring the scenario through film.

The project works are a short film, a space capsule installation and a map of the mission’s path. The film describes a series of episodes transmitted from aboard the traveling spacecraft. The map plots key milestones along the journey that reaches beyond Mars. Based along this path, the film episodes describe the experience of being in space and also some of the unique psychological phenomena that could occur on a one-way trip, such as losing sight of Earth for the last time.

The Same Face is a 1:1 scale set of a drone command centre. The installation plays upon the uneasy similarities found between handmade, hobby flight simulators and actual drone control rooms, where only outside these spaces does the disparity of their potential for destruction become apparent. Inside, among the video monitors and various consoles, a labour of love and an act of war share the same face.

Three video monitors illuminate the room, displaying on-board camera footage of three contrasting landscapes imagined from above. The Grand Hotel in Brighton features along with Shoreham airfield and an unnamed jungle terrain.

Drones exemplify how technology has joined the fighter pilot with a wider global audience in a remote viewing of conflict, where their absence from the sky is mediated by instruments and imagery. The distance from the pilot to the frontline also mirrors the distance from the model maker to their handmade worlds. The set and the imagery together further suggest how aspects of modern warfare closely resemble a video game experience, where the edges of the real and virtual blur in transmissions of animated pixels.

Clear Ideas is a found footage work made by isolating landscapes from two science fiction films. Both films were shot on the island of Lanzarote, which plays a colonised Mars (left) and an apocalyptic Earth (right). Over the otherworldly terrains, a voice projects the words of private spaceflight industry leaders into the wind. The imagery and words collage dreams of spaceflight with nightmares of earthly collapse—a tension played upon in the visions of Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and others. Here, Lanzarote becomes the stage, an analogue site where human progress and catastrophe are imagined in the same place.

Columbus is a short film that explores imagining life in extreme environments through cinematic and other forms of production. In doing so, it responds to the settler myth—embodied by historical figures such as Christopher Columbus and Robinson Crusoe—that further stabilises the vision of outer space as the natural and necessary destination for the progress of humankind. The film itself is a montage of filmed and found footage, where otherworldly landscapes reframe the artificial environment of the botanical gardens as an analogue for a habitat on another planet.

The three primary film sources are original footage from the University of Basel botanical gardens, found camera-phone video from a region in Sumatra affected by rainforest fire, and the 1964 science fiction film Robinson Crusoe on Mars, directed by Byron Haskin. The work plays upon visual associations in colliding fragments of the different films together. A greenhouse is animated with the voice of a Crusoe character, while roadside imagery imbue Martian landscapes with a sense of mundanity.

The Lonely Ones reimagines a short story by author Ray Bradbury, which describes the first human settlers on Mars and their shared experiences. Bradbury’s words reframe found footage shot by residents of the San Francisco Bay Area on the 9th of September 2020, when enormous amounts of wildfire smoke changed the colour of the sky to otherworldly orange hues. By joining a science fiction text together with collective documentation of an extreme weather event, the work envisions the Bay Area as an outer space analogue. Facing the current and projected effects of climate change, along with concerted efforts by leading space industry actors to build off-world futures, it responds to architect Buckminster Fuller’s idea that “we are already in space” and questions what it means to experience Earth—through human eyes—as an increasingly alien planet.
